"... but often the only way to know what awaits us is to live it."
- Mark Nepo
For those of us who learn by experience - by touch, and taste, and heartbeats that speak languages that sound like both pain and love - we’re only going to know what’s next by living it. We’ll make mistakes, and take leaps, and learn to say ‘no’, and try new things, and love new people, and burn ego in the fire of waking up. We won’t grow by staying small and afraid, by repeating the same things we’ve always done, by self protecting. We’ll pause sometimes to look back at the last few miles and remember what went wrong and what went perfectly right. Healing will remind us to shake off shame like dust and learn from who we’ve been. We’ll own our part in conflicts and heartbreaks, but we won’t take shit. We’ll sift through what we’ve gathered and take what’s ours, leave what’s not. We’ll move forward lighter and closer to finding what fits the shape of our souls.
This is it. This is life. We love here, we ache here, we connect here, and we learn how to rise here. There’s just this one thing, don’t go it alone. Whatever it takes for you to be whole, to be free, to be soft again - do that - but let us sit with you in the dark. Let us hold your hand when there are no words. Let us curl around you when grief moves past your throat and unleashes itself from your heart. Let us walk alongside you, prove to you that love is both divine and human. Let us breathe for you, teach you a deeper rhythm for your lungs. Let us hold the doors open while you step outside into something fresher, clearer, wilder than you knew to hope for.
Live all of it, friends. Just don’t live it alone.
